How to Install a Car Tracking Device
How to Install a Car Tracking Device
Step 1: Check the ignition wire and power wire under the dashboard
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the plastic lower dashboard cover. Set aside the cover and screws.
- Locate the ignition wire and constant power wire, which connect to the car's ignition switch. Follow the wires on the ignition switch.
- Verify the wires using a voltmeter. The ignition wire should read 11 to 14 volts when the ignition switch is on, and the constant power wire should read 0 when the ignition switch is off.
Step 2: Hardwire your device
- Use a wire cutter to remove a small section of insulation from the constant power wire.
- Create a small gap between the exposed copper wires using a wire stripper.
- Thread the exposed end of the red wire from the GPS tracking device through the gap in the constant power wire. Twist together all loose wire ends and cover the connection with electrical tape.
- Repeat the process for the white wire, connecting it to the ignition wire using the "stab" method.
- Add a ring terminal to the exposed end of the black wire on the GPS tracker. Place the ring terminal against a metal surface (e.g., steering column) to ground the device. Secure it with electrical tape.
Step 3: Reassemble the dashboard
- Use double-sided adhesive tape to secure the GPS tracker underneath the dashboard. Avoid placing it on the steering column as GPS signals do not propagate through metal.
- Ensure the device is firmly fixed in place to prevent it from coming loose during the journey.
- Tidy up the loose wires with electrical tape and reinstall the plastic dashboard cover, completing the installation.
